Answers

  1. What types of cameras do you use?

Currently I use a Canon 300D (digital rebel) with a Quantaray 28-200mm zoom lense and a Canon EF-S 18-55mm zoom lense (the kit lense). Before that I used a Canon Rebel XS SLR also with a Quantaray (Sigma) 28-200mm zoom lense (althought this lense would not work with the 300D). It was Mike Fitzpatrick's work at This project originally started with a NECRAT inspired me to dump the Fujifilm MX-700 digital camera the project started with. The MX-700 is a 1.5 megapixel camera with a built in 7.6mm f/3.2 lense. In the future I hope to upgrade my lenses with two Canon USM IS zoom lenses to replace the 28-200 so I can lessen the dependency on a tripod.

  2. What type of scanner do you use?

I guess this really should be "did use". The Digital Rebel has made taking pictures fun again, so I am not very motivated to scan the almost 2+ years worth of 35mm pictures I took. Scanning is still slow and CPU intensive process. However, originally I started this project with a UMAX Astra 1200S. Then upgraded to an Epson Perfection 1660 scanner to scan off of the negatives and dump the prints. The bundled Epson program worked okay but later I got a copy of Vuescan. Vuescan is a big improvement over the bundled software. I also use a demo version of Neat Image to combat some of the film grain.

  3. What software do you use?

Files are transfered and administered under windows with Filezilla (Windows) and ncftp under unix. Web pages are prototyped and sometimes maintained with HTML-Kit and other times with the vi text editor under Unix. Testing is done under Windows XP Home edition with Internet Explorer 6.0SP2, althought my HTML is very bland and basic. RAW post processing is done with the wonderful CaptureOne Rebel v1.3.1 by PhaseOne (this product has been retired and replaced by CaptureOne LE. Thumbnailing is done with a decent freeware application called Easy Thumbnails from Fookes Software. Most mapping is done using Microsoft Streets & Trips 2003. Broadcast maps are based on template maps generated by the Census Bureau's Tiger Map server. This site does not currently make use of any database software but will in the future. When the time comes to add database backed features to the site MySQL will probably used and interfaces scripted with either Perl or PHP.

  4. What phones do you use?

The project has standardized on Nokia phones to obtain static GSM, CDMA and TDMA parameters. Below is a table of all of the phones in the Telebeans inventory, their properties and home networks.
