This route dates back to the SouthernNET (Telecom*USA) days. MCI matchsticks can be seen to religously follow Route 60 out of Richmond and continue to the COX Fibernet Lightfoot facility in James City County. There is another repeater along the route near Lanexa but it has been abandonded. Also there are several Continental Cablevision (now COX Communications) matchsticks around the Sandston regenerator. It seems possible that if the fiber along the route was recently upgraded it might be possible to make a straight shot from Richmond to the COX Fibernet facility in Lightfoot. However, the fiber would have had to been upgraded very recently, probably as early as 2002. Additionally, the MCI technicians were still configuring the Nortel S/DMS TransportNodes at the Lightfoot facility around 12/2001 but the owner of the Lanexa hut indicated that MCI pulled out around 1999!
Also these upgrades happened well after the peninsula/southside MCI microwave leg had been fully decomissioned and dehorned. Finally, the Sandston hut, while surrounded by Continental Cablevision matchsticks, is still considered to be an MCI facility since there is a lot of SouthernNET OSP equipment inside the compound.
