IXC Commuinication is now owned by Broadwing. Broadwing employs state of the art fiber technology, almost eleminitating the need for regenerators and/or other optical support facilities. Atleast along the mid-atlantic routes where most major cities and POPs are going to be easily less than 600 miles apart (in the midwest and west this is probably different).
