Faulkner - Richmond 1 (new) Lightguide route

Comments:

This is the third incarnation of the Faulkner to Richmond #1 cable route, part of the greater Washington #1 to Richmond #1 route. The original route was a coaxial cable route and later replaced by what seems to have been a mid to second generation AT&T lightguide route (not first generation but not exactly second generation). The current route seems to follow either the coaxial right of way which seems to be the route the original lightguide route followed.

Unlike other routes (AT&T or other carriers) this route follows an complicated and secluded path from the VA/MD line to some point outside or Richmond in Henrico County. The path will follow the Rt. 301 corridor but is generally well off the sides of the road in far off farm fields or wooded areas only to be seen crossing zig zagging back and forth across Route 301. The route zig zags so often one thinks the cable is trying to avoid German U-Boats. In King George County the route disapears into various gated off wooded areas. The used of these private AT&T ROWs suggest close adherance to the original L carrier coaxial path.

This upgrade maybe be relatively new as the regenerator huts are seperated by about 32 miles in either direction. This allows the new route to bypass the original repeater station in Edgehill on its way to the "Dahlgren" regenerator site. From Dahlgren the cable is probably able to bypass the old AUTOVON/FTS site in Faulkner and make a pit stop at Waldorf (now a long distance access POP) on its way to Washington, D.C. From the "Antioch Fork" regenerator the route is probably just able to get to Richmond 1 without further regeneration.

An interesting aside is that the "Dahlgren" regenerator site is apparently an expansion of an original lightguide route repeater hut (ID FFT2S).
