Route installed in late 40s between 1945 and 1947. Has been supplanted by minor inter POP fiber routes coming out of Moseley. Instead of the relatively straight run of the old route, the current fiber optic facility seems to go south from Richmond 1 to Richmond 2 and then to Moseley where it heads west towards Lynchburg on route 60 dog legging north to Dillwyn. From Dillwyn the route goes down route 15 and then on route 60 west, past the Buckingham troposcatter and presumably to Lynchburg proper. The connection between Lynchburg and Roanoke (coaxial and fiber optic) is unkown. However, there seems to be an inter POP fiber optic route from AT&T's Roanoke POP to a realtively new AT&T POP in Blacksburg. It is thought that this new leg has replaced the coaxial branch from Roanoke to the regional Bell offices in Salem and Christiansburg.
Several of the optical regenerators along the new routes have been found but it is unknown if all of the K carrier huts have survived. Due to the rural path of the route it is assumed all are still standing.
