Regulatory documents put the office at 311 but that is not the case! As the
picture shows, the building is clearly labeled 428. Such an error required
two trips to fix. The lesson is to always be ready to do some cable tracing.
That being said, the office bears a striking resemblance to a library and from
the older light fixtures on the side of the building the office could have
been built as far back as the mid-1940s. If so this would make it one of the
oldest offices in Virginia (oldest being AT&T's Richmond 1 aka Bell
Atlantic's Grace Street CO in Richmond). It should be noted this office is one
of several service "islands". The surrounding area is all GTE. Bell System
OSP equipment dating from the late 1940s can still be seen on Rt. 460 coming
into town from
Wakefield.
