Montpelier is the hub of Sprint Local's isolated Hanover County service island. Originally it provided interconnection to the Gum Tree central office via microwave. However, those microwave links were decomissioned and replaced by fiber otpic SONET rings. The older microwave records cannot be found so this transition probably occured in the early 1990s as the current FCC records only retain records from 1996 and onwards. The network underwent a second major upgrade in an effort to address year 2000 issues by replacing the aging Vidar switches with with more reliable and year 2000 safe Nortel DMS switches. The CLLI code for the Vidar switch is unknown and provided as a best guest. Most likely it is correct.
