Comments:
Probably a post-divestiture access POP for the town of Blacksburg, probably
built due to potential revenue from providing services to Virginia Tech. Many
years ago this site served as a backhaul point for Sprint PCS and CFW Intelos.
Sprint PCS is actually the samething as CFW Intelos (they run network Sprint PCS
users use on behalf of offical Sprint PCS affiliate Horizon PCS). However,
those exchanges have now been reassigned to the CFW Intelos
Waynesboro MTSO
proper. They remain here for historical reasons but do not reflect
current regulatory filings!
Oddly there is a small CFW Telephone building behind the POP. This is probably around to provide interconnection to AT&T's network for CFW Telephone's Alleghany Counties and Covington offices. Why they wouldn't run fiber into Sprint's Lexington CO (a closer AT&T POP) is unknown. Another odd thing, on 12/15/2005 the CFW building was being served by a Bell Atlantic tech!
