Comments:
Benning features that hideous late sixties style of concrete decoration that
plagues a great many of the GTE offices in Virginia (this design style is also
murder on auto focus). Also Benning along with Anacostia, Southeast and Congress
Heights are in the more dangerous part of eastern DC. Anacostia is so bad it
may never be visited. The picture was taken from a hill next to a housing
project on the opposite side of Benning Road. Definately not for the faint of
heart. Sadly the entrance is really at 23rd Place NE but the "front" of the
building was on Benning Road. An unkown that caused this picture to end up
back lit.
The switch is almost certainly a 1AESS. The area just could not justify the expense of converting it to a 5ESS. However this may change as the current pace of gentrification ends near where Floridia Avenue intersects Benning Road. At this point the "character" of the area changes from day to night and the roads seems to degenerate into something one would find in larger third world metropolitan areas such as Somilia and Uganda.
